Hammer Toe Surgery Manhattan, NYC

What Is Hammer Toe?

A hammer toe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes. When afflicted with this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, so that it looks like a hammer. Initially, affected toes are flexible and can be corrected with simple hammer toe treatment. Left untreated, however, hammer toes can become fixed and may require surgery.

People with hammer toe may have corns or calluses on top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe. They may also feel pain in their toes or feet and feel uncomfortable wearing shoes.

What Are the Possible Causes of Hammer Toe?

Hammer toes are caused by ill fitting shoes or a muscle imbalance, usually in combination with a number of other factors. Muscles work in pairs to straighten and bend the toes. If the toe is bent and held in one position for too long, the muscles tighten and cannot stretch out.

Shoes that are narrow around the toes force the smaller toes into a bent position. The toes rub against the shoe, leading to the formation of corns and calluses, which further aggravate the condition. High heels squish the toes against the shoe and force toes to bend. After some time, the toe muscles become unable to straighten, even when the wearer takes of his/her shoes.

Hammer Toe Treatment Manhattan, NYC: Treating Hammer Toe

Hammer toe treatment starts with new shoes that have soft, roomy toe boxes. Shoes should be one-half inch longer than your longest toe. Do not wear tight, narrow, high-heeled shoes. Wear shoes with deep toe boxes that accommodate hammer toe. If you don’t want to buy new shoes, go to a shoe repair shop and have them stretch the toe box so that it bulges out around the toe. Wearing sandals may help, as long as they do not pinch or rub other areas of the foot.

Your podiatrist may also prescribe some toe exercises as part of your hammer toe treatment. He or she may also recommend that you use commercially available straps, cushions or non-medicated corn pads to relieve symptoms. If you have diabetes, poor circulation or a lack of feeling in your feet, talk to your doctor before attempting any self-treatment.

Hammer Toe Removal – Manhattan, NYC

Severe hammer toe can be corrected by surgery when conservative hammer toe treatment is not enough. Normally, hammer toe removal is done on an outpatient basis with a local anesthetic. The actual procedure will depend on the type and extent of the deformity. After the surgery, there may be some stiffness, swelling and redness and the toe may be slightly longer or shorter than before. You will be able to walk, but should not take long hikes while the toe heals. Also, keep your foot elevated as much as possible.

If you need professional hammer toe treatment, Manhattan, NYC podiatrists from Manhattan Footcare can help.
